METER SERVICE TECHNICIAN II

NATURE OF WORK

 

Work involves responsibility for participation in the work and supervising subordinates in maintaining accurate repair and service records, and for maintaining accepted standards of work in the repair, servicing, installation, and removal of water meters and associated piping and valves.  

 

Employees are responsible for determining materials and work methods used.   Assignments come in oral and written form and are sometimes accompanied by blueprints or schematics.  

 

Work is performed with independence within established rules and procedures.

 

Work is inspected during process and upon completion for workmanship, compliance with instructions and specifications, and for maintenance of established standards.

 

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

This classification is distinguished from Meter Service Technician I by the supervisory requirements and the greater experience requirements.

 

 

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

 

Plans, lays out, assigns, inspects and participates in the work of a group of water meter repairers and other workers engaged in repairing, testing and servicing water meters and; performs unusually difficult repair assignments in shop or field.

 

Makes field investigations of complaints of low water pressure or high service charges; checks fire lines and inspects leaks on premises; supervises and participates in the field installation and repair of meters and, and maintenance of meter boxes.

 

Orders and supervises the maintenance of adequate supplies of meters and meter parts.

 

Maintains accurate written and electronic records related to work orders and test results.

 

Performs related work as required.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS REQUIRED AT TIME OF HIRE  

(Applicants are expected to possess the required Knowledge, Abilities, and/or Skills listed below prior to being hired for positions in this job class.)

 

Knowledge of methods, practices and materials involved in the maintaining, testing, servicing and field installation of water meters.

 

Knowledge of the construction and operating principles of water meters, pressure gauges, portable flow meters, pressure recorders, Meter Master, and electronic recording devices.  

 

Knowledge of plumbing techniques related to working on water meter pipes and valves.

 

Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations related to confined spaces.

 

Ability to perform basic field repairs and determine service needs of water meters and associated piping and valves.

 

Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of subordinate workers.

 

Ability to maintain accurate written and electronic records related to work orders and test results.

 

Ability to train and instruct subordinates.

 

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

 

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. unassisted.

 

Ability to work from written and oral instructions.

 

Ability to read water meters.

Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in maintaining or installing water meters.

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

 

Graduation from an accredited high school or other equivalent certification; two (2) years of experience in the repair, testing and installing of a wide variety of water meters and backflow prevention equipment; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
