This is semiskilled work in the operation of a water or wastewater treatment installation.

Work involves the operation and minor maintenance of equipment at a water or wastewater treatment plant.  Employees in this class serve as trainees.  Work is performed under the direction of supervisors or higher classified employees. Incumbents work with some independence in accordance with established procedures which include periodic inspections and evaluations to measure development in this class.  


Performs a variety of cleaning tasks in areas or structures, such as chemical rooms, chemical feed equipment, various water/wastewater treatment units, pumping stations, electrical rooms, secondary containment areas, head house bar screens, and general grounds keeping.  

Monitors and   records chemical inventories related to the water and wastewater processes; handles chemicals and chemical deliveries for lime, chlorine, ammonia, coagulants and polymers, ferric chloride, fluoride, and diesel fuel.  

Assists in the operation of diesel engines including starting and stopping, regulating speed, and watching gauges and recording equipment; keeps equipment clean and lubricated; takes hourly equipment readings and records them on daily log sheets; keeps the plant and grounds clean.

Assists in the operation of filters, chemical feed systems, pumps, and chlorinators; records equipment readings; runs chemical analyses of raw, settled, filtered and finished water and records results on daily log sheets.

Operates, under close supervision, equipment related to waste disposal plant processes, including settling tanks, trickling filters, aeration tanks, vacuum filters, incinerators, sludge flotation units, digesters, diesel engines and generators; makes hourly checks on equipment to see that it is operating properly, lubricates equipment; handles chemical transfers; maintains a check on inventory chemicals such as chlorine, lime, flocculent, and diesel fuel.

Makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; assists plant mechanics on maintenance projects.

Performs related work as required.


Some knowledge of the general operating principles and practices and the maintenance requirements of mechanical and electrical equipment similar to the types utilized in water and waste treatment plants.

Some knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in the work.

Some knowledge of operating and maintaining principles and procedures for a variety of pumps, valves, filters, and related equipment associated with water/wastewater collection, treatment, and distribution systems.

Some knowledge of procedures/techniques for troubleshooting water/wastewater treatment plant operations and associated equipment.

Some knowledge of chemicals used in treating water/wastewater.

Some knowledge of established safety procedures for operating a variety of pumps, valves, filters, chemical applications and related equipment associated with water/wastewater treatment, and collection/distribution systems.

Some knowledge of basic chemistry principles related to water/wastewater treatment system operation.

Some knowledge of State/County rules and regulations regarding water/wastewater treatment.

Ability to understand and follow specified operating and recording procedures.

Ability to detect faulty operating characteristics in equipment or processes and to institute remedial action.

Ability to operate equipment effectively and efficiently.

Ability to analyze problems and identify possible solutions.

Ability to read, understand, and follow instructions.

Ability to calculate/determine adjustments to water/wastewater treatment processes needed to maintain compliance with State/County rules/regulations.

Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and/or division.

Ability to troubleshoot and/or identify operational problems with a variety of pumps, valves, filters, and related equipment associated with water/wastewater treatment systems.

Ability to learn/perform a variety of work activities associated with the operation and maintenance of a variety of pumps, valves, filters, and related equipment associated with water/wastewater treatment systems.

Ability to operate a variety of pumps, valves, filters, and related equipment associated with water/wastewater treatment systems.

Ability to work different work schedules, hours, or shifts.

Graduation from high school or an equivalent recognized certification; six (6) months of experience in the operation or maintenance of mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical equipment similar to that utilized in treatment plant operations; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.


Candidate must possess a valid Florida Driver’s license.   Incumbent must obtain a Class “C” Certification issued by the State of Florida in either water or wastewater within two (2) years of employment.
