NATURE OF WORK
This is skilled work in the repair and maintenance of refrigeration equipment.
Work involves the installation, repair, maintenance and servicing of refrigerators and refrigeration equipment and their component parts in air-conditioning and water cooling systems. Assignments are received in the form of oral instructions or written job orders from a supervisor. Work is inspected in process and upon completion by supervisors and a further automatic check is made by the persons utilizing the service.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Overhauls and services refrigeration units by repairing, replacing or adjusting worn or broken parts on condensers, compressors, water and vacuum pumps, air conditioning systems and centrifugal chillers.
Tests refrigeration equipment for refrigerant leaks.
Repairs or adjusts valves, piping connections, fittings and couplings.
Removes and installs motors, thermostats and humidistats.
Adjusts expansion valves; adjusts or changes belts.
Replaces gaskets, hinges, and hardware.
Checks gauges and makes inspection for preventive maintenance.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of practices, methods, materials, and tools commonly used in repair and service of various types of refrigeration equipment.
Knowledge of the mechanical operation and repair characteristics of various kinds of refrigeration equipment.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.
Skill in the care and use of tools and equipment essential for the repair of air-conditioning and refrigerating equipment.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school; experience in the repair of refrigeration equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a Universal Certification as issued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and a valid Florida Driver's License.
