DIESEL MECHANIC

NATURE OF WORK

 

This is skilled technical work in the maintenance, adjustment, repair, installation, of diesel and gas driven portable and stationary stand-by generators and pumps.

 

Work involves application of the principles of mechanical, electronic, and electrical repairs, adjustment, and replacement of diesel and gas engine driven stand-by generators and pumps and their components.

 

Duties also include preventive maintenance, inspections, and field service of the gas and diesel equipment when deployed to facilities.   Work assignments are received orally and in writing.   Work is generally performed independently, however, it is subject to review in progress and upon completion, through inspections and written reports and satisfactory performance of equipment.

 

 

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

 

Performs installation, maintenance, adjustments, modifications, and repairs, of gas and diesel engine driven stand-by generators, pumps, and related equipment.

 

Performs preventive and predictive maintenance on, and replacement or repair of diesel engines, gas engines, generators, pumps, controls, and towing appurtenances.

 

Checks tires, coolant, and water and oil levels and other systems during deployment.

 

Ensures work is accomplished in a safe and efficient manner.

 

Ensures the quality of work performed.

 

Ensures equipment availability is adequate to meet the operational needs.

 

Makes repairs and adjustments on gas and diesel generators and pumps and related equipment.

 

Orders replacements parts when necessary for gas and diesel generators and pumps and related equipment.

 

Leads the proactive maintenance efforts of the organization for gas and diesel generators and pumps and related equipment.

 

Monitors equipment performance utilizing the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

 

Maintains, calibrates, repairs, and troubleshoots a variety of electrical, electronic, and hydraulic/pneumatic control systems for gas and diesel generators and pumps and related equipment.

 

Serves as lead worker to plan and assign the work of subordinates and instructs them in proper work methods and procedures.

 

Performs related work as required.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS

 

Knowledge of the operating principles and practices and the maintenance requirements of gas and diesel driven portable generators and pumps and related equipment.

 

Knowledge of common occupational hazards and safety precautions associated to generator electrical/electronic trades working with a variety of voltages.

 

Knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods and practices used in the maintenance, repair, and installation of portable generators, pumps, and related equipment.

 

Knowledge of the principles and theories of electrical/electronic and hydraulic/pneumatic equipment as applied to electrical generating devices, motor control devices, and other generator, pump, and related equipment.

 

Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the mechanical and electrical trades.

 

Ability to interpret and work from technical sketches, schematics, circuit diagrams, plans, and equipment service manuals.

 

Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of subordinates and to instruct them in proper work methods and procedures.

 

Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

 

Ability to provide written and oral instructions to employees in lower classifications.

 

Ability to estimate time, labor, materials, and equipment needed to repair, install, and maintain portable gas and diesel driven generators, pumps, and related equipment.

 

Ability to keep records and prepare reports.

 

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of BrowardCounty's Ethics and Conflict of Interest Policies.

 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, color, religion, age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, marital status or political affiliation.

 

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

 

Graduation from high school and/or vocational training in electrical and/or mechanical and two (2) years of experience in the repair, installation, and maintenance of portable gas and diesel driven generators, pumps, and related equipment; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.

 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

 

Possession of a valid Florida Operator Driver's License.
