This is highly responsible supervisory and administrative work in planning, organizing, and directing the activities of the Aviation Maintenance Division.

Work involves responsibility for the administration and direction of maintenance activities for county-owned airports and related facilities. Position incumbent directs all activities related to the maintenance of airport facilities, including maintenance of airport terminals, office buildings, runways, ramps, roadways, building systems, and jetways in accordance with FAA regulations and County policies and procedures. Work also includes directing the operation and maintenance of a warehouse, motor pool, and landscape operation. Assignments are received in the form of broad policy statements. Work is performed independently with general supervision by an administrative superior. Performance is reviewed periodically through conferences and written reports.


Administers the County's Aviation Maintenance program; directs through subordinates the planning, scheduling and coordination of divisional activities; develops policies, procedures and priorities to meet established goals.

Develops, implements and maintains strategic, fiscal and capital improvement plans for the Division.

Develops, implements and maintains a comprehensive maintenance program for all airport facilities to include maintenance of elevators, escalators, air-conditioning systems, jetway loading bridges, automatic doors, fire alarm systems and computer controls.

Prepares, monitors and enforces contracts for services such as landscaping, elevators, escalators, computers, electrical switch gear, janitorial and security.

Prepares and monitors Division budget and prepares special reports as required.

Represents the County before community groups, service organizations and civic committees to promote the development and use of airport facilities.

Attends conferences and public and professional meetings.

Performs related work as required.


Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of construction and airport maintenance.

Thorough knowledge of all federal, state and local regulatory requirements applicable to airfield and terminal maintenance, security and safety.

Thorough knowledge of the funding process in a municipal environment as related to budgeting, cost accounting, financial planning and management.

Thorough knowledge of the materials, methods and techniques used in an airport maintenance program.

Thorough knowledge of contract administration.

Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of supervision, organization and administration.

Ability to plan, implement and coordinate technical and administrative programs.

Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in establishing, applying and interpreting policies and procedures.

Ability to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials, and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, or political affiliation.


Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with major course work in engineering or related field; six (6) years experience in managing airport maintenance functions at a civil airport, including four (4) years experience in the administrative and supervisory aspects of the work; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
