PORT EVERGLADES BUILDING TECHNICIAN II

NATURE OF WORK
This is skilled work involving the operation, maintenance, cleaning and repair of environmental, mechanical, electrical, communication, security and other building systems within Port Everglades.
 
Work involves the use of manual and power hand tools. Assignments may include occasional work performed atop ladders and scaffolding. Work is performed in close proximity to live high voltage electrical systems and equipment. Employee inspects facilities, grounds, waste management, and pest control conditions for compliance with contractual agreements. Work is performed in accordance with established practices pertaining to Port owned and operated buildings. Employee is given oral and written instructions. Work is performed under the guidance of a superior. Work is inspected while in progress and upon completion for quality of workmanship.
 
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
 
Performs routine daily inspections of all support equipment for the building assuring that all systems are operating within normal ranges and reports overall building conditions to superior.
 
Assists with the maintenance of Port facilities, grounds, and equipment.
 
Observes system operation and adjusts mechanisms, such as valves, controls, piping connections, fittings, couplings and pumps to obtain proper performance level, pressure and temperature under the direction of the supervisor.
 
Assists with the dismantling of malfunctioning systems and testing components using electrical, mechanical and pneumatic testing equipment; replaces or repairs defective or worn parts.
 
Maintains a daily log of all systems indicating operating characteristics and any problems and advises Superior of problems.
 
Operates audio and visual systems and provides other assistance at meetings, as needed.
 
Performs related work as required.
 
KNOWLEDGE ABILITIES AND SKILLS
 
Knowledge of the basic maintenance requirements for large Port owned or operated buildings.
 
Knowledge of the principles and practices of facilities management, and methods and testing instruments commonly used in the repair and service of refrigeration, sewer lift stations, energy management systems, traction elevators, fire protection systems and general lighting and electrical systems.
 
Knowledge of city and state electrical codes relating to the operation and maintenance of safe structures.
 
Knowledge of preventative maintenance procedures and techniques, and of hazards and safety precautions.
 
Ability to work from blueprints or electrical diagrams.
 
Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor for extended periods in all weather conditions; and perform work at moderate heights.
 
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
 
Ability to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.
 
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
 
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, marital status, political affiliation, familial status, disability, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or gender identity and expression.
 
Skill in locating and adjusting defects in electrical systems and equipment.
 
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
 
Graduation from high school or equivalent recognized certification supplemented by vocational training or apprenticeship in electrical, hydraulic, electronic controls, and electronic hydraulic fields; four (4) years experience in industrial or commercial maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
 
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
 
Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License at time of appointment.
