This is supervisory and advanced technical/ sub-professional engineering work involving the full range of advanced drafting and design support tasks.

Work involves producing complex drawings of high technical sophistication and finished drawings and details from rough sketches or verbal directions. Work involves the application of basic engineering principles and techniques to a variety of engineering projects. Work also involves planning, assigning and reviewing the work of subordinate drafters. Considerable independence and judgment is exercised in planning and carrying out assignments. Work is reviewed through conferences, reports and program effectiveness.


Prepares complete detailed drawings of engineered systems, regardless of the level of complexity and follows through with necessary revisions and corrections, as directed by senior engineering staff.

Performs basic or frequently used engineering calculations; prepares estimates for designs.

Prepares bills of materials, equipment lists, technical specifications and other contract documents.

Conducts site inspections to gather project information, and construction inspections to determine conformance with contract specifications.

Has responsibility for the supervision and review of the work product of subordinate staff for accuracy.

Performs special investigations and field studies of technical and engineering operations.

Develops or details minor design or portions thereof; checks finished drawing sets.

Utilizes various drafting media such as acetate overlays, Leroy Lettering, Chartpak and Zip-a-tone in preparation of drawings, charts and graphs for public presentations.

Keeps drafting room supplied with adequate production material; ensures that equipment is well maintained.

Performs other duties as assigned.


Thorough knowledge of the standard principles, practices, techniques and instruments of engineering technology and drafting.

Thorough knowledge of the drafting and detailing of architectural building systems, structures, roadways, and utilities.

Considerable knowledge of mathematics including algebra, geometry and trigonometry and its applications to engineering.

Considerable knowledge of personal computer systems, and AutoCAD software for engineering and architectural drafting.

Some knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering as they apply to the design of buildings and other structures, roadways and parking areas.

Some knowledge of various industry and DOT standard specifications and codes for the design of buildings and other structures, roadways and pavements.

Ability to work with a minimum of direct supervision.

Ability to perform field inspections of construction projects of varying sizes. This work may include strenuous physical activity for extended periods in all weather conditions.

Ability to perform technical computations, analyze complex data, and prepare plans and reports based on findings.

Ability to plan, direct and supervise the work of subordinates and to instruct them in proper work methods and procedures.

Ability to prepare technical and complex engineering drawings.

Ability to express ideas effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation or sexual orientation.

Skill in the use of common engineering field and office instruments.

Skill in the use of a personal computer and related software for report preparation.


Completion of two (2) years college level course work in engineering technology or related field; five (5) years progressively responsible experience in mechanical and computer assisted drafting, engineering technical work, or a similar position, including supervision of other drafters; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience. Must possess a valid Florida driver's license at time of appointment.
