PORT EVERGLADES MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR

NATURE OF WORK

This is advanced supervisory and administrative work in the construction, maintenance and repair of facilities at Port Everglades.

Work involves the assignment of and review of subordinates performing varied duties within the construction trades, to include carpentry, plumbing, painting, air conditioning, and electric circuitry. Employee in this class is also responsible for planning, laying out,, assigning and coordinating with administrative supervisors the daily maintenance and repairs performed by assigned public works personnel. Supervises all cruise terminal operations, assigns personnel, inspects facilities and serves as direct contact with the cruise line operators.

The employee serves as the primary Public Works contact on weekends. Employee in this class insures that proper safety procedures and equipment are used; inspects Port facilities to insure proper operations, maintenance and repairs are performed.

Employee assists in the preparation of Division's annual budget and recommends cost control measures. Work also includes maintaining records and preparing and submitting reports. Employee exercises considerable independent judgment concerning job priorities and methods and materials to be used on each project.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Coordinates work orders and supervises the work of trades workers, mechanics, equipment operators, maintenance workers, grounds, custodial and other diverse classifications in performing a wide variety of tasks.

Supervises personnel responsible for the installation of marine fenders, plumbing, masonry, carpentry, painting, electrical, refrigeration and other related work.

Assigns personnel to work activities; serves as the direct contact with cruise line operators.

Assists with the planning and implementation of work methods and projects; conducts continuous training program for maintenance staff.

Assists in the preparation of the Division's annual budget and recommends cost control measures; completes performance appraisals for subordinate employees.

Estimates time and materials required for jobs; determines manpower needs for maintenance crews and assigns work accordingly; coordinates with other supervisors the work assignments of personnel from other units.

Inspects and performs preliminary troubleshooting procedures on malfunctioning systems and determines proper work classification assignments; performs the more skilled tasks as necessitated by work load; institutes preventative maintenance programs.

Maintains work records and submits requisition forms and specifications for supplies and materials.

Assists superiors in planning and implementing work projects and work methods.

Coordinates the physical operations of a large county facility; inspects Port facilities to insure proper operations and maintenance are completed; works closely with the Port Property Manager to ensure timely repairs to all leased Port facilities.

Ensures adherence to local, state, and federal regulatory requirements as applicable to area of assignment.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of construction and maintenance of buildings, roads, and utilities.

Considerable knowledge of equipment maintenance and of the tools, equipment, materials, and practices of the building trades.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards, and the local, state and federal rules and regulations applicable to assigned work.

Knowledge of preventative maintenance procedures and techniques.

Ability to make estimates of needs in terms of labor, material and equipment.

Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates and to instruct them in proper work methods and procedures.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work with a minimum of technical supervision.

Ability to read schematics and blue prints; and to keep work records and prepare reports.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school or equivalent recognized certification; four (4) years supervisory experience in one or more areas of public works; construction trades or fleet maintenance, which must have included experience in planning multiple work assignments; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience. A valid Florida driver's license at time of appointment.
