NATURE OF WORK
This is technical laboratory work in a medical examiner’s laboratory performing a variety of biological and chemical analyses in forensic toxicology .
Incumbents perform chemical analyses of material and/or potentially infectious body fluids, such as urine and/or blood. Employees in this class work with independence within established laboratory procedures and policies. Work requires speed and accuracy in conducting a large volume of tests. Work is subject to review by a technical superior for adherence to established standards.
Collects and analyzes samples including biomedical fluids and tissue; conducts quantitative and qualitative chemical analysis of such samples using laboratory equipment; transcribes data from charts and performs calculations appropriate to the particular sample and specific tests.
Thoroughly documents sampling activities.
Calibrates laboratory instrumentation using calibration standards; may perform and evaluate periodic quality control runs with current control/calibrators.
Prepares specimens for laboratory analyses; prepares reagents and drug standards; assists chemists, toxicologists, and/or other technical staff as required.
Conducts immunoassay testing of urine specimens obtained from other County agencies, such as the Broward Sheriff’s Office Drug Court Program and the Substance Abuse and Health Care Services Division.
Participates in research projects as directed.
Performs maintenance of laboratory equipment including cleaning or washing glassware.
Performs general laboratory house keeping/cleaning work, as directed and appropriate to the area of assignment.
Prepares reports and maintains records using a personal computer with basic office software and Division-specific applications.
Records and tabulates data; prepares charts and graphs; logs-in biological specimens, using proper ‘chain of custody’ procedures as required for Medical Examiner cases or law enforcement agencies.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of microbiology, toxicology, and/or chemistry as required for the area of assignment.
Knowledge of modern laboratory equipment and scientific instruments used in the area of assignment, such as those used in substance abuse testing.
Knowledge of the terminology, practices, and techniques of laboratory work.
Knowledge of the methods for the collection of samples appropriate to the area of assignment.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of chemical analysis.
Ability to operate machines and/or equipment common to a forensic toxicology laboratory.
Ability to perform assigned laboratory related tasks according to standard methods to meet quality control criteria.
Ability to prepare accurate and complete reports of laboratory findings.
Ability to use a personal computer and associated office software.
Ability to use basic computer office software and Division-specific applications.
Ability to work with tissue samples in a decomposed, burned or mutilated state.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Completion of two years of college level course work in chemistry or other closely related field; two (2) years of experience in medical or forensic laboratory technician work; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
Depending upon area of assignment, may be required to possess a valid Florida driver’s license and to be able to drive throughout employment and to obtain and maintain authority to drive on County business.
