NATURE OF WORK
This is supervisory work in the performance of construction, maintenance or general labor operation.
Work involves responsibility for supervising the activities of subordinate supervisors, unskilled and semi-skilled laborers, and equipment operators engaged in construction, maintenance, or general labor operations. Work is performed independently within the limit of plans, instructions, and standard operating procedures. Assignments are received from a supervisor who makes on-site inspections to evaluate work progress and to provide technical direction as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This classification is distinguished from Labor Supervisor I by the supervisory responsibility over subordinate supervisors and laborers, and by the increased experience requirements.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Supervises street maintenance crews engaged in concrete, asphalt patchwork and topping repairs; supervises equipment operators and laborers in the maintenance of unpaved streets and shoulder and ditch work.
Supervises crews in the field performing emergency sewer system maintenance work; supervises preventative maintenance on mains, laterals and manholes.
Supervises labor crews in installing sewer connections from mains to property lines, repairing and installing water and sewer lines and connections, and repairing leaking and defective sewer mains; supervises mortar crews in rebuilding damaged or deteriorated manholes.
Supervises several water meter service crews in setting and changing water meters and providing locator service for all county crews.
Supervises construction crews in the repair of park structures, buildings, and equipment.
Maintains appropriate records in connection with work assignments.
Prepares requisitions for materials and estimates costs in terms of labor and supplies.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment utilized in the projects to which assigned.
Considerable knowledge of the work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned projects.
Ability to assign and supervise the work of subordinates and to instruct them in the proper work methods and procedures.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to interpret simple plans and sketches.
Ability to prepare and maintain routine work records and reports.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school; considerable supervisory experience in maintenance, construction, or general labor operations depending on area of assignment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
