NATURE OF WORK
This is professional and administrative work managing the operations of a County-wide data communications network.
Work involves planning, coordinating, and providing technical direction for the Data Communications section. Duties include reviewing and approving network designs, evaluating new data communications equipment, recommending cost effective solutions, and reviewing problem trend reports. Supervision is exercised over subordinate professional and technical personnel. Work is reviewed by an administrative superior through conferences, reports, and evaluation of results.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Provides staff direction in order to provide maximum network availability; ensures that network related problems are promptly resolved.
Plans, schedules, and assigns available resources to the successful accomplishment of organizational goals and directions.
Coordinates the data communications repair services and provides analysis reports for more effective problem determination and resolution.
Establishes standards and procedures for basic troubleshooting techniques and supervises their application to the County's network communication components.
Reviews reports of problem trends to avert potential problems or situations and looks for improved ways to solve customer's needs.
Provides necessary documentation and procedures for communications related problems and resolutions.
Provides technical research, review, consultation and recommendations on network hardware and diagnostic equipment acquisitions.
Prepares cost-benefit analyses and statements for network configurations.
Supervises the installation, testing, and evaluation of network communications and diagnostic equipment.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of theories and methodologies currently used in communications systems to provide data transmissions through various types of computer lines and protocols.
Considerable knowledge of data communications characteristics of terminals, lines, modems, diagnostics equipment, and WAN/LAN components.
Considerable knowledge of current technology and developments in the fields of data communications and office systems.
Considerable knowledge of effective management theories, principles and practices.
Considerable knowledge of planning, organization and supervision.
Considerable knowledge of quality customer service practices.
Ability to supervise a staff of professional and technical personnel and promote teamwork and effective communications among staff.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with major course work in computer science, business administration, or related field; four (4) years experience in installing and maintaining communications networks and project management, including two (2) years experience in the supervisory and administrative aspects of the work; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
