PUBLIC SERVICE INTERN

NATURE OF WORK

This is standard office clerical or technical work which provides the opportunity for professional training in various offices throughout the County.

Employees in this class work according to well defined procedures and methods. Detailed instructions and close supervision are received at the beginning of work and on new assignments. Routine assignments may be performed more independently with some initiative and judgement utilized as experience is gained. Work involves assisting in the coordination of special projects or programs which provide a supplementary county service. Duties may involve the operation of standard office computer equipment to offer practical experience and broad exposure to the County's organizational structure. Work involves serving as liaison with local public high schools and other community agencies. Supervision and administrative direction is received from a supervisor; emphasis is placed on training the incumbent for continued employment within a county or local governmental agency.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Sorts and distributes mail and other materials to various county departments.

Answers incoming telephone calls and routes them to the proper person or department; answers questions regarding routine matters.

May be required to perform assignments on the computer.

Provides information and assistance to the general public and other governmental agencies.

Maintains files of records, reports and other materials.

Assists in special project assignments by collecting and sorting materials, preparing daily reports, arranging appointments.

Provides liaison to various county projects and community services.

May operate standard office, or other technical equipment. Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Some knowledge of office practices, procedures and standard clerical techniques.

Ability to learn assigned tasks readily and to adhere to prescribed routines.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to make standard decisions in accordance with procedures and regulations and to apply them to work problems.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

Skill in the operation of standard office equipment.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
