Program Updates

Closest Unit Response

Phase one of Closest Unit Response successfully rolled out on Monday, March 2, 2020 in the Cities of Sunrise and Lauderhill. That will be followed by launches in North Lauderdale, Oakland Park and Tamarac on March 16th, and Fort Lauderdale on March 30th.  In all, 87 front-line fire rescue vehicles have been equipped with new computers to support Closest Unit Response, a primary component of the new Regional 911 system, overwhelmingly approved by voters.

If an equipped, capable, and available Fire Rescue unit is within two minutes of a life-threatening emergency, Broward County’s new Computer Aided Dispatch System (CAD) uses GPS to locate and automatically dispatch that unit to that emergency, no matter the jurisdiction. More…

Hollywood East Radio Tower Update

City of Hollywood officials have been informed that Broward County plans to proceed with a 15-tower site Regional System. The remaining tower of the Regional System (West Hollywood) is currently under construction, and all constructed sites are concurrently being reviewed and finished. System migration and cutover plans are in development, and stakeholder meetings are being planned to keep everyone informed of the path forward.

For the yet to be determined East Hollywood site, the city of Hollywood is in the process of talking with our vendor, Motorola, to determine the cost and scope of building a tower that would be owned, operated and maintained by Hollywood, at a location of their choosing. Hollywood’s system won’t include County-installed equipment but must meet the County’s system specifications to operate effectively and efficiently as a stand-alone site with interoperability into the Regional network.

Project Updates

Procurement for Public Radio System Moves Forward

The County's efforts to improve the aging Public Safety Radio System continue. At the March 8th Commission meeting, the County Commission unanimously approved authorizing staff to begin negotiations with Motorola to install a single site 700 MHz Overlay System (Broward County Project 25 - 700MHz Interoperable Overlay System). A major step toward improving Broward County's Public Safety Radio System has been taken by the County Commission. On February 9th, the Board voted unanimously to begin the process to pre-qualify vendors interested in submitting proposals on a project to replace the public safety radio system (Project 25 Public Safety Radio system). On January 19, 2016, Broward County Administrator Bertha Henry issued the following response documents as follow up to a series of meetings with Fire and Police Chiefs’ Associations on a project to replace the Public Safety Radio System. The proposed new system will fully replace the legacy system with a modern digital radio system with redundancy and back-up capabilities. More...

Tower Construction

New radio tower sites across Broward County are in various stages of construction and permitting, part of an $80 million project to complete a 16-tower system that will strengthen radio communications for first responders. Twelve sites are complete; four sites are currently in various stages of completion. The County is still awaiting permitting for the East and West Hollywood Tower sites. A new shelter is being installed at the Channel 2 location in McTyre Park in Pembroke Park and the County is still in the negotiating process with the Miami Dade School Board (shared ownership) to replace the existing tower with a new one. The Pompano Beach Club site equipment room construction, antenna/dish and line installation and electrical is set for completion in September with project completion expected in October 2019.

A third-party consultant has determined that West Lake Park in Hollywood, and not the top of the Circ Hotel as preferred by the City of Hollywood is the best location for the West Hollywood location. Permitting is underway.

Public Safety Radio System for First Responders Only

The initial migration of approximately 4,000 local government agency and public school radio users from the public safety radio system to a new local government radio system is complete. The new $1.3 million investment in infrastructure results in a dedicated public safety radio system for first responders and saves money on the cost of radios for local government and public school users.
