If your local specialty contractor license type has already been, or will be, eliminated effective July 1, 2025, and you would like to pursue licensure as a state certified contractor, options and department resources are available as provided below:
Individuals may apply to obtain a state certified contractor license needed to perform the scope of work authorized by your previously held local specialty license. Information regarding the state licensure process, including scope of licensure and examination exemption requirements, can be found by visiting the CILB’s homepage or contacting the department here.
Individuals may petition the CILB to create a new certified specialty license category. To begin this process, please email CILB@myfloridalicense.com. CILB staff will respond to your email and provide information regarding the steps required to properly petition the CILB for a new certified specialty license category.
Please be advised that a fee increase for all new contractor and journeyman licensing applications and contractor and journeyman license renewals will take effect on January 1, 2025.
- Contractor’s licensing application or renewal will now be processed at the rate of $450.00.
- Journeyman’s application fee will be $225.00, and the renewal rate is increased to $120.00.
- Grandfathered letter fee will be at $50.00 for each license to be grandfathered to the State of Florida.
- Change of status application fee will be $350.00.
- Letter of reciprocity will be $50.00 for each letter
Sunset of the Tree Timmer Certificate of Competency (License)
Broward County no longer requires Tree Trimming contractors to hold a Certificate of Competency (License) as of July 1, 2025 due to the changes taking affect with Florida House of Representatives HB 735. This also includes the requirement for the Broward County Extension Education for Tree Trimming Training Couse and passing the examination from the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) or the American Society of Consulting Arborists (ASCA).

The Florida Senate has passed, and the Florida State Governor signed House Bill 735 . House Bill 735 states that specific “Certificate of Competency" licenses issued by local jurisdictions, including those related to construction occupations, will be prohibited after July 1, 2025. If you are applying to become a contractor and are denied, you can request to appear before the Board for review. You may also receive a request to appear before the Board if you have a received a violation or have failed any requirement of the Certificate of Competency.
